Unions can be defined as the action of coming together to protect their rights or change the working force. Being around for decades unions have their benefits and doubt but it's necessary because economy is constantly changing and so does society. Workers today may think they should higher that what they're actually being paid for and putting up a strike can allow them to get what they want. But if a person alone feels that they want better working conditions it is their decision to leave. Society can benefit from the unions and gives the public an opportunity to their interests.
Barack Obama states "...[A]s I look out on this crowd and as I travel across this country, the one thing I know for certain is that labor unions are still mobilizing. Labor unions are still organizing. And you're still fighting to give America's working people a voice in Washington.
I'm tired of playing defense. I know the AFL-CIO [American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organization] is tired of playing defense. We're ready to play some offense. We're ready to play offense for a decent wage. We're ready to play offense for retirement security...
We're ready to play offense for organized labor. It's time we had a President who didn't choke saying the word 'union.' A President who knows it's the Department of Labor and not the Department of Management. And a President who strengthens our unions by letting them do what they do best - organize our workers. If a majority of workers want a union, they should get a union."

Unions give workers a choice to what they're jobs are. If a teacher has been through the highest level of education and paid for his extended learning to become the best at his/ her field then the particular group of people who agree have the right to demand higher pay. Unions allow this kind of action to occur. Barack talks about giving the working people an opportunity to act on their behalf to allow them to defend themselves. The use of offense shows that companies expect this kind of conflict between the employees. The president being in support of unions, gives a better chance to increase benefits for the working people. Environmental changes was also permitted for the unions whenever they felt that their working field was too dangerous to do their jobs. Demanding and enforcing security is one of the qualities that gave unions an advantage. Many unions spoke out on working conditions. Working class benefit more being in unions.
"In the 20th century, the United States government began to take actions by passing labor laws. Labor laws such as the Fair Labor Standards Act (1938), Labor-Management Relations Act (1947), Equal Pay Act (1963), Civil Rights Act (Title VII – 1964), and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA – 1970) required employers to ensure all employees’ rights were protected and their working conditions were safe.
In the 21st century, due to the numerous federal and state labor laws enacted, labor unions are no longer needed. In fact, they are anti-productive. As labor unions continue to negotiate higher wages and benefits, some companies are seeking cheaper labor in other countries while other companies have even gone out of business due to rising costs." _JeanMarie Harper (http://www.examiner.com/article/are-labor-unions-still-needed-the-united-states-today)
Unions sometimes don't work people end losing their jobs and being replace.(http://www.cartoonwork.com/unions_g54.html) |
My conclusion is viewing both sides bring up a great debate whether unions should be around. A great benefit of unions is that the workers have the right to ask for a higher pay. Providing safety or a safer environment is allowed to workers if they get together and develop unions. A doubt about unions is that they aren't needed anymore. Laws have been passed to protect the working people from just about majority problems from the past. Generations are different so working class are being continuously changing for the better. I think unions should still be around because certain jobs are still dangerous and not enough is being done to protect the workers. People with low income, and immigrants might be afraid to form a union in case they'll lose there job. Sometimes poverty doesn't give the worker much of a choice but to except the job no matter what conditions they're. Unions are still necessary.
